When it comes to wine, I’m a firm believer that the seasons dictate not only what we eat but what we drink—and nothing proves this more than summer. As soon as the sunshine breaks through the clouds, my taste buds crave wines that are crisp, vibrant, and utterly refreshing. The sort of bottles that belong next to a garden salad, sizzling seafood on the BBQ, or simply in a glass while your feet are up and the sun’s on your face.

I love how the warmer weather makes me reach for wines that feel like a cool breeze. For me, that means chilled reds, zesty whites, and of course, a glass (or two) of ice-cold rosé. These styles all bring brightness and a lift of acidity that pairs beautifully with the lighter fare of summer—think grilled fish, fresh salads, and impromptu picnics under a shady tree.

Even the summer BBQ, with all its smoky char and sticky marinades, needs wines that won’t overwhelm the food. Reds with soft tannins and juicy fruit—like a lightly chilled Beaujolais or a young Pinot Noir—can be perfect companions to sweet, spicy barbecue sauces and chargrilled meats.

Rosé All the Way

Summer and rosé are a match made in heaven. There’s something utterly joyful about pouring a glass of pale pink wine as the sun sets. Provençal styles are crisp and dry with delicate notes of wild strawberries, watermelon, and a touch of herbs. For something with a bit more oomph, try rosés from Spain or Italy—they often pack a little more fruit but still keep that refreshing edge.

The Joy of Chilled Reds

Not enough people give reds a chance in summer, but I’m a huge advocate of serving certain reds lightly chilled. A cool Pinot Noir or Gamay takes on a deliciously silky texture, with vibrant red berry notes that feel almost as refreshing as a white wine. It’s a brilliant choice with summer charcuterie boards, grilled vegetables, or even a simple tuna niçoise.

Summer Whites: Crisp, Bright, and Lively

Of course, white wines are the summer classics. I’m talking about wines with zingy acidity, clean citrus notes, and maybe a little touch of minerality or salinity. Albariño from Spain (or its Portuguese twin, Alvarinho) is an absolute favourite of mine this time of year. It bursts with peach, lemon zest, and a whisper of sea spray—perfect with grilled prawns, chicken Caesar salad, or a flaky fillet of salmon.

For a lemony, super-refreshing hit, you can’t go wrong with a Sauvignon Blanc. Or, if you fancy something aromatic, try a dry Riesling—it’s like a burst of lime and green apple, and it works wonders with spicy Asian dishes enjoyed in the garden.

No & Low Alcohol: Summer Sips Without the Buzz

Of course, summer’s not just about what’s in your glass—but how it makes you feel. Sometimes, you want all the refreshment and flavour without the alcohol, whether you’re the designated driver, pacing yourself on a long sunny afternoon, or simply taking a mindful break.

The good news? No & low-alcohol wines have come on in leaps and bounds, and there are some brilliant bottles out there that capture all the vibrancy of summer without missing a beat.

A sparkling option like Zeno Alcohol Liberated Sparkling is perfect when you’re craving bubbles. It’s crisp, bright, and offers delicate fruit notes that make it feel like a celebration, even if you’re keeping things light.

My Picks for Summer Greats

                                                                                                                                       Ventoz Vinho Verde 2024

Citrus colour with glossy reflections, with intense flavours of passion fruit, grapefruit and melon. Also detected aromas of fresh apple. Persistent wine, which leaves a round flavour in the mouth with a refreshing acidity.

Darriaud - Cotes Du Rhone Rose 2023

Elegant and amazingly gastronomic, Darriaud Rose shows aromas of strawberry with touches of green apple. The light and refreshing palate brings more red berries, alongside touches of melon on the crisp and moreish finish. Try with shellfish, chicken, salads, feta or soft cheeses.

Soleil Couchant Saint Amour Beaujolais 2021

From the most northerly of the Beaujolais Crus, this Saint-Amour wine is characterised by light, soft red fruit flavours with an underlying structure and spice that intensifies with age.

                                                                                                                                 Zeno Alcohol Liberated Sparkling

Yellow/green straw appearance with a fine, persistent mousse and aromas of green apple, elderflower and creamy lemon zest.
On the palate, a delightfully crisp attack with creamy bubbles and notes of crisp apple and elderflower is followed by mouth-filling citrus and fresh lemon thyme and hints of brioche on a long satisfyingly fresh finish.

As the sun keeps shining (fingers crossed!), I’ll be keeping these wines close to hand. Summer is too precious not to be savoured—and what better way than with a glass of something delicious, enjoyed in the warmth of the season?
                                                                              Cheers to summer’s greats!
